The Crown of Success
By Charlotte Maria Tucker (1864?)
as A. L. O. E. (A Lady of England)
Madame Desley has entrusted her four children to the care of Mr. Learning. Each receives a little Cottage of Head to furnish, and a daily allowance of Time-Money. To the child who uses the Time-Money best will be presented the silver Crown of Success. Will the children persevere? Will Procrastination pick their pockets? Will they turn to such dangerous friends as Pride and Folly? Join Dick, Matty, Lubin, and Nelly as they encounter Mr. Alphabet, visit Mr. Arithmetic & Grammar's Bazaar, and meet with Duty and Affection. Who will win the Crown of Success?
Character Lessons:
Perseverance, Patience, Humility, Diligence, Wisdom.
Elements for Parental Consideration:
"Gay" (as in happy or brightly colored); "rich as Croesus"; "saucy puss"; "lazy"; "stupid"; "rogue"; "fat"; "pussy" (as a teasing term like "kitty"--not inappropriately); "lack-a-day!"; brief mention of Mythology and Phrenology; a pipe is used to blow bubbles; one of the boys punches the other; the children are very selfish and rude at times, but I think everyone learned a lesson or two by the end of the book.
