Christie's Old Organ; or, "Home, Sweet Home"
by Mrs. O. F. Walton (1874)
Little Christopher, better known as Christie, has had no home since his dear mother died. He wanders the streets alone until one night he hears an old organ grinder play a song--the same song he remembers his mother singing just before she died.
Treffy has been alone for years, except for his trusty old organ. When he falls ill, it is the little boy called Christie who watches over him and walks the streets every day, playing the old organ for pennies when Treffy cannot. Then a discouraging prediction from the doctor leaves both of them wondering where "Home, Sweet Home" is, and how to get there.
Join Christie on his journey and discover the truth of Heaven, Christ, and salvation.
Character Lessons:
Salvation, Trust in God, Living to Please God, Home Missions.
Elements for Parental Consideration:
Mention of a dead mother; mention of a song about a "lover" (boyfriend) who left a girl to die forlorn; Spoiler: Treffy dies.
*reference to Pilgrim's Progress.
*Keswick doctrine is taught: the preacher teaches salvation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as occurring at two separate times; he also teaches that people are to grow more perfect after salvation so that they can fit in with the God's kingdom, and that God takes them to heaven when they're ready. (Is it just me, or does that sound like transcendentalism?)
